Modded Minecraft is a vast community full of toys, machines and survival changing mods that it can feel like you are swimming in a sea of them. We would like to help you in choosing mods for your adventures by creating a list of our favorite ones. As with any opinion piece though there are bound to be ones you want to send an angry tweet over us not including. These are just ones we currently play with that left an impact on us. They are not in any order.

Notice: If you are building your own modpack, please remember to be safe in your downloading. We advise to only download from either Curse, from the authors website or from within the authors forum post within the Minecraft Forum.

Industrialcraft 2 / Gregtech

Industrialcraft is a mod I remember that first got me interested in Minecraft modding back before mods were being made for servers. When IC1 was first updated to include support for servers (back when you had two different versions of a mod and often times there was no server version) I jumped into the modding scene.
Mod Description:

This is it. IC², the future of IC.
While playing it, you will feel right at home again, rediscovering most of the stuff known from IC. However, once you get your machines running, you will quickly notice how smooth and well-designed everything works now. Wiring is easier, batteries aren't as two sided (on/off) anymore, new cables, rubber stuff, new machines, EVERYTHING was added.
Create obstacle courses of Metal Poles and Rubber-Sheets, explore the Nether with an Electrical Jet pack or blow up whole landscapes at once by using the Dynamite-O-Mote. Or discover the much more complex mechanisms of Nuclear Engineering, blow up your hut or burn your hands. Or grab the rusty ol Composite Vest, and start hunting Creepers with the new, almighty NanoSaber.
It's up to you, it's MINEcraft after all.

Gregtech 5 / 6

Gregtech is a mod that the community has a love/hate relationship with. It is not directed to the casual player but at the adventurer who enjoys changing things up and adding complexity to the slowly stagnating tech mod market. If there is anything within the mod you do not like you have the robust config file to tweak it to how you wish. Gregtech 5 and 6 are different beasts, with 6 still a WIP but a better optimized experience. Word from the wise, search up on some Gregtech youtube guides on getting started, even the ore gen is changed.

Lycanites Mobs

Lycanites mobs will transform your expectations from the mobs in the game. You will be watching your back around every turn as you wait for death to visit you. As you learn how each mob functions and their counters, the experience becomes much less brutal. I like the mod a lot for how it makes me fear for my life after how boring the default mobs have become to me.

This mod adds many new mobs to specific biomes, dimensions and more. These mobs range from peaceful Makas, farmable mammal-like reptiles with massive sails (watch out for the alphas) to horrific Grues that are made of the very darkness itself! Expect to see angry elementals such as Cinders spawning from large fires or Spriggans from tall grass and crops!

Armourer's Workshop

Armourer's Workshop is a mod that lets player create their own custom weapon and armour skin in game. Imagine having the transmog system from World of Warcraft inside Minecraft but where you build the models yourself from within the game! You can also share your creations with friends and clan mates. I mean come on, look at this!

Botania

I love mods that try to do something different in how they convey how to use their mod. Too often a mod adds things you have to search wikis to find about the mod you just added. Botania adds an in game book that helps get you started with the wonderful world of flowers.

Mod Description
Botania is a tech mod themed around natural magic. The main concept is to create magical flowers and devices utilizing the power of the earth, in the form of Mana.
Botania is fully playable by itself (and is designed to be played like that), but it functions well with other mods too.
The mod focuses on automation without grinding. By which systems have to be thought out and not just created by following blueprints on NEI or a wiki.

OpenComputers

Minecraft Versions 1.7.10 / 1.8.9 / 1.9.4 / 1.10 - Download

This mod adds computers that can be programmed in Lua 5.2 and 5.3. Computers persist across saves (i.e. execution resumes where the computer was saved when it is loaded again), they are highly modular(there are graphics cards, network cards, redstone cards, ...). If a compatible power generating mod is present, by default they will need power to run - however, like pretty much everything else about the mod, this can be changed in the config.

Hardcore Ender Expansion

Hardcore Ender Expansion offers unique, new content across the End. The dragon became a truly challenging boss with a great reward, but the adventure doesn't end there. The End is no longer just an island. Go investigate unique ores, battle new mobs, travel to new biomes, the death awaits you! ... I mean, adventure. Adventure awaits you.
To get familiar with the mod, use the Ender Compendium, which is a source of information about every feature of the mod! By exploring new blocks, items and mobs, you gain points which you can use to unlock information about these objects. You can open the Ender Compendium using the 'P' key by default.
Another important part of the mod are achievements, which will guide you through the main features. You can access them via the Compendium as well.

MAtmos / PresenceFootsteps

MAtmos - Minecraft Versions 1.7.10 / 1.8 - Download

MAtmos is a sound atmosphere generator for Minecraft. Whenever you play on any multiplayer server or in singleplayer, it looks at your surroundings and generates natural noises as a soundscape, such as birds chirpling in the forest, rumbling noises near a lava lake or wind gusts on a hilltop. This fills out the perpetual silence of Minecraft.

Presence Footsteps

Presence Footsteps is an overly complicated footstep sound enhancement mod for Minecraft. It changes the way footstep sounds are produced, in addition to a whole new set of sounds.
Presence Footsteps adds new sound effects when Minecraft didn't play any sound at all, such as jumping, landing, walking on the edge of a block, foot shuffling when coming to a stop.
It also plays sounds differently whenever you're running, and allows each block to be played in a different way: Metal fences does not sound like iron blocks; Walking over rails both plays a faint metallic sound and the surface below it; Walking on a piston pointing upwards sounds like wood.

Railcraft/Steve's Carts 2

Railcraft started off as a simple minecart mod, but it has since become much more than that.
It features a fully fleshed out tech tree, with great effort gone into providing a balanced gameplay.
Railcraft was also one of the pioneer mods when it comes to Multi-Block structures. It features a whole slew of these structures, including the mighty Steam Boiler and the stunningly massive Iron Tanks.

RFTools

RFTools is a mod containing various tools that are related to RF (Redflux) or technology in general. The blocks and items that are in the current version are usable and feature complete. The major feature in this mod (since 2.00) is the Dimension Builder. With this device you can make your own dimensions for exploration, mining, building and so on.

Applied Energistics 2 / Extra Cells 2

Applied Energistics 2 is a mod that focuses on creating a compact, easily accessible, considerably extendible storage system called an ME Network. EC began with just being an Add-On for bigger Storage Cells, but after that it evolved into the AE Fluid System. Minetweaker (CraftTweaker)

CraftTweaker - Customized Minetweaker3 is a continuation of Minetweaker3 by StanH.
MineTweaker allows you to customize your modpack or server with a simple scripting language. With a few instructions, you can add or remove recipes, change mod recipes, alter names, change furnace recipes, the ore dictionary, tooltips and many other things.
MineTweaker is often used to fix conflicting recipes and make recipes from different mods interact and balance with each other better. Scripts are sent from server to client, thus different servers using the same MineTweaker-enabled modpack may have different configurations without having to update clients.

Buildcraft

BuildCraft is a mod that uses machines to mine resources, craft items, and sort resources. It also has machines that can automatically build structures based on blueprints. The mod also includes pipes to transport items, liquids, and power.

The main thing we like about Buildcraft is the builder block and wish it was more widely used.

Project Red

NotEnoughItems or JustEnoughItems

JEI is an item and recipe viewing mod for Minecraft, built from the ground up for stability and performance.

Waila

Waila (What Am I Looking At) is a UI improvement mod aimed at providing block information directly ingame, without the need of opening an UI. It provides a small unobtrusive tooltip on top of the screen with informations about the block the player is looking at.

JourneyMap

JourneyMap is a client+server mod for Forge which maps your Minecraft world in real-time as you explore. You can view the map in a web browser or in-game as a Minimap or full-screen. It comes in two editions: FairPlay (disables cave-mapping and radar in Multiplayer) and Unlimited (all features available in Multiplayer).
